Letting Go of the "Perfect Stoner Girl"

I was the perfect stoner girl. Runner. Honors student. Friendly. Put-together. People said they couldn't believe how much I smoked because it never seemed to touch my life.

That was the trap.

When weed stopped being fun and started being maintenance, first thing in the morning, spiral by minute twenty, still lighting up anyway, I couldn't admit it. High achievers don't get addicted, right? Wrong. Anything can become the thing you can't stop if your brain learns to reach for it every time life gets quiet, boring, or bruising.

The identity was insidious because it came with applause. I liked being the exception. Even when I wasn't one.

Quitting weed the first time was brutal, anxiety, insomnia, irritability I didn't expect. Coming back after more than a year sober from weed taught me something harder: I can't moderate. Not circumstantially. Not when life is good. Not "just on weekends." For me, it's all or it's a slow slide.

Letting go of perfect stoner girl also meant facing what weed masked, body image noise, boredom, the empty stretch after grad school when I didn't know who I was without the next hit scheduled.

You don't have to be a mess for your use to count as a problem. Functional and dependent can coexist for years. Shedding the label isn't losing your personality. It's finally telling the truth.

TL;DR

High-functioning daily cannabis use can become identity, especially when people praise how well you 'handle it.' Letting go of the perfect stoner girl myth is often the first honest quit attempt.
